Effect of acid concentration, temperature and time on the hydrolysis of hemicellulose in oil palm empty bunches

Oil palm empty bunches are lignocellulosic waste which has not been well utilized. Due to its high cellulose content, this waste can be converted into glucose or fermentable sugars through acid or enzymatic hydrolysis. The cellulose hydrolysis however, is relatively difficult due to the presence of crystalline structure of cellulose and the association of cellulose with hemicellulose and lignin. To remove these barriers, an experiment on the hemicellulose hydrolysis using diluted sulfuric acid at various concentrations, hydrolysis temperatures, and times was conducted with an objective of removing hemicellulose without degrading the cellulose. Response surface methodology was applied for data analysis to find out the optimum conditions of the process. The results showed that to obtain a low content of hemicellulose and a high content of cellulose in the residue as the hydrolysis product, the hydrolysis should be conducted using sulfuric acid at a concentration between 2.5 percent to 3.3 percent for 9.8 to 11.3 hours at a temperature of 93.5 to 97.5 degree C.
