Research is crucial to the growth and development of any organisation's objectives. Has the non-profit development sector like the NGO recognised this? This study was carried out with an aim to: provide an operational definition of NGOs, provide a review of NGOs in Eastern and Southern Africa; address the question of research and development within NGOs in the region and its relationship to other issues such as the overall contribution of NGOs to development, their weaknesses, strengths and sources of funding. Also observations are made on the state of databases that provide information on NGOs.
