Distribution of sucrose and non-sucrose substances in sugar beet [Beta vulgaris] roots, 2

Investigation was made in the distribution of sucrose and harmful substances, including raffinose, in roots of sugar beets grown in test fields. The trial conditions included direct sowing and transplanting, and fertilizer application at different rates. The variety used was Highrave, and test readings were recalculated so as to represent 10 stratal root portions. The results were as follows: 1) In a root from the transplanting plot, sugar content was rather low in the upper and lower layers of the root, while it was highest in the middle layers. In a root from the direct sowing plot, the highest sugar content was observed on the layer locating a little upper than the middle section. 2) The distribution of K and that of A-N was almost similar to each other, and was opposite to sucrose distribution. Thus, in the transplanting plot, they were low in the middle layers, while being high in both the upper and lower layers. Also, in the direct sowing plot, their content reached the minimum in the layer locating a little upper than the middle section. 3) The highest Na-content was indicated on the top layer, from which the content declined almost linearly toward the bottom layer. The difference observed in Na-content between the top and bottom layers for the heavier fertilization plot and the direct sowing plot were larger than those for the comparison plots. 4) The distribution of raffinose in sugar beet roots showed to be almost similar to that of Na. The content of raffinose was indicated to be the highest in the top layer, from which declining almost linearly toward the bottom layer
