Development of temporary drainage technique in sloped farms

The studies were carried out to investigate the actual draining condition of surface flow in sloped farms and to develop the technique of constructing temporary drainage in farm as one of the method of soil conservation. The results are summarized as follows: 1) Severe soil erosion was observed in the inter-ridges where surface flow came together, in the farms reclaimed on improved slope. Temporary drainage technique, using the soil stabilization methods, is to protect such ridges against soil erosion. 2) Temporary drainage technique is for farmers to be able to easily construct using farming machines, as one of the domestic reconstruction engineering. 3) Temporary drainage was given enough durability against soil erosion by the cement by 2% to the weathered granite soil (masado) or the slaked lime by 4% to the clayey soil. 4) In the practical application, the effective arrangement of long-term type and short-term type of temporary drainage in farm should be decided by farmers, considering the surface flow condition in their own farms. 5) In the test cultivation on the site of temporary drainage, the good soil condition was given for germination of crops by rotary tillage, but not for crop growth on the basis of the pH rise owing to heavy dressing of cement or slaked lime in the site. The high pH is neutralized with superphosphate in laboratory experiment, but under the present technical level, it seems that dispersion of the soil of the drainage sites all over the farm is the best way to get the good soil condition for cropping
