Effect of small herbivorous sea-snails on survival rates of the young laminariales plants

Changes in the number of young sea-tangle Laminaria japonica were followed through a 5-week laboratory experiment under four steps of water temperatures (2.5-10.0 degrees C) with five steps of small herbivorous sea-snail densities (0-24 or 0-240 total body weight/square-meter). Although the growth in leaf length increased with increased water temperature, the number of sea-tangles decreased inversely with increased water temperatures and herbivorous sea-snail density. One of the major factors which contributes to a dense sea-tangles population in a year of unusually low coastal water temperatures is thought to be the suppression of the feeding activity of small herbivorous snails which are known to feed on young laminaria sporophytes
