[Per se yielding and GCA (general combining ability) of corn (Zea mays) inbred lines for detecting high yielding inbreds]

The purpose of this work was to know among the following options the best to obtain high yielding single cross hybrids: high yielding inbred lines without considering its GCA; high yielding and high GCA inbred lines or solely high GCA inbred lines. The genetic material consisted of 20 S1 lines, its 20 topcrosses and 20 chain single crosses of the form 1x2, 2x3,..., 19x20 y 20x1, derived from the 10th cycle of visual stratified mass selection of the Zacatecas 58 corn variety. The sixty genetic materials were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replicates in three localities. It was detected a positive highly significant correlation between yield of the inbreds and that of their topcrosses (GCA), between yield of single crosses and the average yield of their inbreds and between yield of single crosses and the mean GCA of their inbreds. The per se yielding inbred line test resulted as efficient as that of topocrosses to evaluate the inbred GCA. The highest yield inbreds resulted also in high GCA inbreds and produced the highest yielding single crosses. It was inferred that the common GCA test appears not to be necessary for detecting high yielding inbreds of high specific combining ability. The single crosses of higher yield resulted from parental inbreds whose yield was something above the 70 percent the yield of the single cross.

El presente trabajo se elaboro con el proposito de conocer, entre las siguientes opciones, la mas conveniente para obtener hibridos de cruza simple de alto rendimiento: lineas de alto rendimiento per se sin considerar su ACG; lineas de alto rendimiento per se y de alta ACG. Estas opciones se estudiaron con 20 lineas S1 derivadas del Compuesto de 10. ciclo de seleccion masal visual estratificada de la variedad de maiz Zacatecas 58, con las que se formaron 20 mestizos, utilizando como probador a la variedad original, y 20 cruzas simples en cadena, de la forma 1x2, 2x3,..., 19x20 y 20x1. Mediante cruzas fraternales se aumentaron las 20 lineas S1. Los sesenta materiales geneticos se evaluaron en un diseno de bloques completos al azar con tres repeticiones en tres localidades.
