Sarawak has been the principal exporter of sago starch to the world market. This monopoly is basically due to the well established sago cultivation areas available and the large scale production of sago practised in this state. This is further supported by an effective subsidy and research programme from the State Government. Over the past five years, there has been tremendous progress in the local sago industry. This includes the opening of the first sago plantation, increased number of sago processing factories, increasing interest in research and development in both upstream and downstream activities, and improvement in starch extraction and processing technology producing high quality sago starch. This paper discusses the present status of the Sarawak sago industry with special emphasis on production, supply and demand, quality and utilization of starch. It also covers the problems and constraints faced by the industry and the future of the industry
