IRAC has published an international survey of the present status of insecticide resistance in the field; this survey is currently being updated. An educational video about resistance has been produced and is now being made available in a number of languages. Standardised resistance monitoring methods have been designed for the main groups of insect and mite pests. At the same time, IRAC's specialist working groups have been in active collaboration with governments to develop management strategies for insecticide and acaricide resistance. IRAC is involved in a new international effort to promote the implementation of resistance management worldwide. The special conditions of tropical agriculture (eg. multivoltine pests, heavy insecticide use) encourage the development of resistance, and 75percent of serious resistance problems occur in the tropics. Current emphasis on integrated pest management makes it more important than ever to safeguard those pesticides which are suitable for use in IPM programmes. Thus the work of IRAC has particular relevance to the tropics, and IRAC is ready to collaborate with governments, academic bodies and farmers to combat resistance
