Analysis of copper and its status in cattle from Morobe province [Papua New Guinea]

The copper status of cattle from sixteen farms in the Morobe province was investigated by the analysis of liver and serum for levels of copper. It was found that fifteen farms had copper present but below normal. The normal level was 0.60ppm and 100ppm dry matter. Haemolysed serum samples were often found to give higher results than non-haemolysed serum samples. Samples stored for nine days at room temperature gave lower values than those stored in a refrigerator or freezer. No significant difference was found between trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) and glyerol procedures. Treatment of test serum with concentrations of 5,11,15 and 20 per cent TCA did not give any significant difference in copper concentations.
