Genetic and physiological studies on nonanoic acid in rice (Oryza sativa L.) hull

It was found out that NA [nonanoic acid] is a naturally occurring SCFAs [short chain fatty acids] in rice accessions collected over a large geographical region. NA content was positively correlated to the degree of seed dormancy in rice. Release of rice seed dormancy was positively correlated to the decrease of NA during storage, which explains the mechanism of after-ripening in rice. NA content in rice hull was quantitatively inherited. The nature of gene action was in additive manner among the parents studied. The inheritance of the genes controlling high NA content was in partial dominance, with high NA content dominant to low NA content. No maternal effects were observed in the inheritance of NA content. The genes controlling seed dormancy exhibited partial dominance, with strong dormancy dominant to weak dormancy. The inheritance of dormancy was controlled mainly by genes with additive effects. Some degree of dominance, and low material effects were also observed. Both traits, NA content and dormancy, were highly heritable. Cultivars of high NA content and strongly dormant were shown to be more tolerant to accelerated aging treatment than the ones with low NA content and weak dormancy.
