In the Philippines, rice production is limited by soil problems which include toxicities namely salinity, acid sulfate soil conditions and excess organic matter. Cultivated rice further suffers from deficiencies of nitrogen, phosphorus, zinc, sulfur, and iron. Strategies to overcome soil constraints include water and nutrient management and breeding for soil stress tolerance. Use of IR cultivars give a yield advantage of about 2 t/ha over non-adapted varieties. On moderately affected soils the use of tolerant cultivars minimizes costly amendments.
