Studies on the recovery of rice plants from tungro virus infection

Seedlings and panicle-bearing plants of Taichung Native 1 and other commercial rice varieties infected with rice tungro virus recoverred naturally, regularly and en masse from the disease. Recovered plants and their ratoons remained symptomless and healthy. Recovery from the disease was based on the absence of visual external symptoms, negative reaction to iodine test and absence of virus particles in ultra thin section viewed under the electron microscope. Symptomless plants arising from rice tungro virus infection are not a phenomenon of symptom masking but a case of complete and total recovery. These findings of recovery which could be reproduced repeatedly are unusual for a confirmed virus disease in plants
