Storability of corn using village level technique

Five open-pollinated varieties of corn, namely USM Var 2, USM Var 6, USM Var 8, USMARC 0191, and USMARC 1191 were stored for three months in different containers such as tin can, bottle, aluminum foil paper, plastic bag, paper box, and nylon sack under ambient condition. The accelerated aging technique (AAT) which simulates the effect of ordinary room storage condition was used as the screening method. Results show that after three months of storage, corn seeds stored in tin cans and bottles gave the highest percentage germination followed by seeds stored in aluminum foil and plastic bags. Corn seeds stored in paper boxes and in sacks gave the lowest percentage germination after 3 months of storage. Results further show that the storage containers used did not influence varietal performance in terms of seed viability during storage.
