Life history of the black ant (Dolichoderus thoracicus Smith) in association with the mealybug (Planococcus lilacinus (Ckll.)) and its effects on regulating Helopeltis bakeri Poppius population

The life history of Dolichoderus thoracicus was studied. Under laboratory conditions, D. thoracicus worker completed its development in 25 to 27 days. The duration of each immature stage was as follows: incubation period, 8 to 19 days; first instar larva 2 to 5 days; second instar 2 to 5 days; third instar 3 to 5 days; fourth instar 2 to 5 days; and pupal period 8 to 18 days. In the field the influence of the black ant on Helopeltis bakeri damage and its role in regulating H. bakeri population in association with the mealybug were studied. The pods [cacao pods] with ants and mealybugs in the sleeve-cage had very few lesions caused by Helopeltis. All Helopeltis caged with the black ant and the mealybug died. The dry seed yield per pod was higher on trees with ants and mealybugs than from trees without ants and mealybugs. Black ant in association with mealybugs reduced the population of Helopeltis per pod; damage rate, and percent damage. The mean number of ripe pod was higher in the plants with ants and mealybugs than the control.
