Modified almaciga (Agathis philippinensis) resin for paint manufacture

Crude almaciga resin was modified using two methods: 1. thermal processing at 340 deg C - 360 deg C and 2. esterification of the resin with glycerol. The modified resins, viz. "run" resin which was a product of thermal processing, and resin ester which was a product of esterification, were found to be soluble in linseed oil, lumbang oil, turpentine, and mineral spirits. Decarboxylation of the crude resin during thermal processing and esterification was monitored through acid number determinations and infrared analysis. Reduction of the carboxyl groups made the modified resins compatible with paint pigments. Sixteen experimental paint formulations for flat enamel paint using run resin and resin ester in either linseed oil or lumbang oil were subjected to standard tests for specific properties. Fineness of grind, flow/brushing property, weight per liter and adhesion were found equal to or better than the standard (a white commercial paint). However, viscosity of the paint formulations was low compared with the standard. The paints were also off-white due to the dark color of the resin and oil. Weathering tests showed no traces of flaking, peeling, blistering or chalking and only minimal cracking on the specimens coated with the paint formulations. Using Friedmans' statistical tests, two formulations incorporating run resin (R20-F3 and R20-F4) and one formulation incorporating resin ester (R30-F16) performed satisfactorily and comparably with the standard.
