Developing cotton fiber was analysed for its fresh and dry weights, water content, reducing and total sugars, and acid invertase activity. Developing cotton seed was also analysed for reducing sugars content and a close correspondence between reducing sugars and water content was discernible. The role of acid invertase, sugars and water content in osmoregulation, energy metabolism and synthesis of cell wall constituents during fiber and seed development is discussed
