The purpose of this audiovisual training module is to present background information on lentil hybridization and briefly outlines the crossing technique. The module enables the audience to explain the term hybridization and indicate the special advantages of hybridization in lentil breeding; to describe the two main steps of hybridization: raising of parents and artificial crossing; to appraise three important elements of the layout for raising in the crossing block, including: plant density, interrow arrangement of male and female plants and staggered planting; to describe the four main parts of a lentil flower; to identify three major steps in fertilization; to list and relate three tools needed for crossing; to recall four sequential steps in emasculating a flower; to discuss three steps in artificially pollinating a flower; to distinguish between successful and unsuccessful crosses; and recall important harvest and post-harvest operations associated with seed collection
