The mechanisms of pre-harvest sprouting resistance are complex and frequently interact to confer tolerance under conditions conducive to sprouting. Conventionally, elimination of certain factors, either naturally or artifically, allows the expression of other factors free of interaction. However, genes controlling sprouting tolerance may potentially be manipulated, independent of environmental conditions, using biochemical and molecular techniques
