Several genetic traits were compared in Argentine bread wheat varieties, lines and segregating F3 families with and without the 1BL-1RS translocation. Genealogical and cytological observations were performed to detect the presence or absence of the 1BL-1RS translocation. Lines carrying the rye segment showed resistance to the leaf rust (Puccinia recondita tritici) strains tested; however, one strain had a susceptible reaction. In these lines, resistance to powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis tritici) was mainly associated with the Kavkaz origin of the translocation. Sedimentation tests showed significant differences between carrier and noncarrier lines and F3 families, with translocation carriers having lower values; however, two sets of six new wheat varieties each, with and without the translocation, did not show any difference at all. We conclude that no important drawbacks seem to be associated with this introgression into Argentine wheats, although good flour quality is affected
