Using line source gradients in a multi-environment testing strategy to combine and evaluate mechanisms contributing to sprouting resistance

Moisture gradients generated by line source (LS) sprinkler irrigation may provide a screening mechanism for sprouting tolerance in low rainfall arid environments with parallel screening in high rainfall areas. An LS gradient was used to examine sprouting resistance in 48 spring triticales. Water application followed a linear response and alpha-amylase samples were taken from six zones over six dates from 15 days post 50 percent anthesis. Gravity irrigation ensured near optimal moisture conditions in all zones. In environments where dormancy is suppressed, changes in alpha-amylase activity through the LS gradient and across sampling dates can be attributed to glume effects, seed hardness or starch resistance to alpha-amylase degradation. Selected genotypes are then screened for dormancy in environments conducive to its expression
