Soil characteristics after mining

Tailings from the processing of tin ores in Ranong, Phangnga and Phuket Province, mainly composed of sand or gravelly sand which contain organic matter, N, CEC, available P and K less than 0.5 %, 0.02 %, 2 me./100 g. soil, 5 and 30 ppm respectively. However for the ones that included in the area of saline-acid sulphate soils of the mangrove swamp the soils often become extremely acidic. These soils are structureless compacted low in water holding capacity, nutrient retention and prone to erosion. The landscape is very rugged consisting of gravel piles, sand mounds, depressions and excavated ponds. Therefore their everall agricultural potentials are very limited. The goal of reclamation should not aim for agricultural purposes and the priorities should be given to any procedures that can spead restoration of the tin-mine tailings at a low cost and that are appropriated to the environment. Furthermore, it certainly needs and sound collaboration from the concerned goverment agencies and private sectors to plan and adequate strategy for development and implementation.
