Studies on wastewater treatment using water hyacinth

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is one of the most prolific aquatic plants, which spread at an alarming rate. They create many problems to the water way. Many works on the management of water hyacinth had been carried out in order to control as well as to utilize them for industrial purposes. In this study treatment of the wastewater by water hyacinth has been investigated both in laboratory and the experimental pond. Wastewater from domestic as well as from factory producing cassava starch were used for investigation. During the experiment changes in BOD, COD and pH of the water were studied. Removal of pollutants is significantly enhances by the introduction of water hyacinth as compared to the natural purification. When wastewater from the factory producing cassava starch having COD and BOD of 1,000 and 500 mg./l. were used in the experiment, removal of pollutants up to 88 and 95 % in 15 days were found, compared to the natural purification which can reduce only up to 20 and 32 %, respectively. Experiment conducted in the experimental pond indicated that when water hyacinth is used, removal of BOD and COD is better than natural removal by 49.2 and 68 %, respectively.
