Ten medicinal plants: stemona, nux-vomica tree, derris. purging croton, star anise, clove tree, garlic, caraway, lemon grass and thorn apple were tested for their antifungal property to 21 fungal species namely Absidia spinosa, Choanephora cucurbitarum, Phytophthora sp., Pythium aphanidermatum, Rhizopus microsporus, Ceratocystis paradoxa, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Sordaria fimicola, Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum dematium, Drechslera maydis, Fusarium solani, Geotrichum candidum, Melanconium fuligineum, Myrothecium roridum, Sclerotium candidum, Pleurotus ostreatus, Thanatephorus cucumeris, Tricholoma crassum, Ustilago maydis and Volvariella volvacea. Star anise at the concentration of 20,000 ppm completely inhibited growth of all tested fungi followed by caraway, lemon grass, clove tree, stemona, garlic, nux-vomica tree, purging croton, thorn apple and derris respectively. Crude extract of star anise could inhibit growth of Drechslera maydis on agar media, but could only minimize the infection of this pathogen on corn seedlings.
