Studies on parasitic problems in native chicken in the Southern part of Thailand

Incidences of parasitic infestation were in native chicken rather high in the southern part of Thailand. Parasites collected from 200 chicken were studied. The rate of infection was 81 % (162/200). The site of infection and identified parasites were as follows : Eye -Oxyspirura mansoni 12.96 %; Esophagus and crop -Capillaria contorta 4.32 %; Crop -Gongylonema ingluvicola 16.05 %; Proventriculus -Dispharynx nasata 7.41 %; -Tetrameres sp. 13.58 %; Gizzard -Cheilospirura hamulosa 5.56 %; Intestine -Ascaridia galli 40.12 %; Duodenum -Strongyloides avium 1.85 %; -Amoebotaenia cuneata 2.47 %; Intestine -Raillietina echinobrothida 69.75 %; Kidney -Tanaisia sp. 0.62 %; Bursa of fabricious -Prosthogonimus pellucidus 2.47 %; -Prosthogonimus macrorchis 2.47 %; Cecum -Heterakis gallinalum 11.73 %. The investigations indicated that one chicken might be infected by only one kind of parasite (53.70 %) and the other might be infected by 2 - 6 kinds (46.30 %). These studies will be helpful to select suitable drug to deworm chicken.
