Evaluation of peanut germplasm for resistance to the complex of insects in North Carolina, Philippines and Thailand

This experiment was a collaborative project among the entomologists of NCSU, Philippines and Thailand. The aim was to evaluate 250 groundnut germplasm for resistance to the complex of insects in North Carolina, Philippines, and Thailand. These lines were divided into three groups-the F3 leaf hopper test (52 lines), The ICRISAT test (74 lines) and the insect germplasm test (124 lines). They were planted in two repetitions at NCSU, four repetitions in the Philippines, two repetitions at the DOA, Thailand and two repetitions at KKU. The trial at KKU was planted at two planting dates, using a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Plot size was single row, 5 m. long. The first crop was planted on 26 June 1986 and harvested on 4 October 1986. The second crop was planted on 11 November 1986 and harvested on 4-5 March 1987. Ratings were done on the complex of insect pests and pod damages. The results from all locations will be combined by Dr. W.V. Campbell of NCSU. High incidence of leaf miner occurred at KKU, thus, the test at KKU was considered a good test for leaf miner resistance. Quite a number of lines showed good degrees of resistance to leaf miner, and the lines with less than 15 % leaf miner damages are given.
