A considerable amount of vitamin B12 in the intestinal tract of Tilapia (Oreochromis nilotica) was assessed by microbioassay method using Lactobacillus leichmanii after cultivating fish with several test diets for eight days. Vitamin B12 production was observed in the intestinal contents of Tilapia fed on vitamin B12 free diets. An increased amount of vitamin B12 was observed when the excised intestinal tract was incubated in vitro for 8 hr at 25C. The addition of sulfanilamide to diet did not always cause the decrease of vitamin B12 in the intestinal tract contents. The results show the production of vitamin B12 by the intestinal microflora of tilapia.
