Examines different aspects of supplemental irrigation for increasing the yield of wheat. The crop is grown during the dry rabi season predominantly in rice-wheat rotations. Long duration of dry days coupled with soil water deficit cause the wheat crop suffer from frequent droughts. The intensity of droughts in different agro-ecological zones of the country vary depending on presowing rainfall, frequency of dry days, prevalence of extreme temperatures and the amount of profile stored moisture from the preceding monsoon. The crop shows maximum sensitivity to moisture stress during crown root initiation and tiller formation stage and later at grain-filling stage. In general, yield losses due to drought vary between 60 and 70% in very severe and between 50 and 60% in severe drought-prone areas of the country. Supplemental irrigation at critical growth stages of the crop can increase the yield of wheat as far as 50%. This offers potential opportunities for increased production of wheat.
