Impact of an education programme on mothers' knowledge on infant and child feeding practices [Bangladesh]

This study was conducted in a village as a part of the campaign on the promotion of home made weaning foods, in rural areas of Bangladesh. Knowledge on the importance of prelacteal feeds, breast feeding, home-made weaning foods, correct weaning practices and dangers of delayed weaning and bottle feedings was disseminated to the mothers of the study households of this village. Practical demonstration on the preparation of home-made weaning foods were also conducted in different parts of the village. Improvements in mothers' knowledge on the above mentioned topics were assessed through baseline and follow-up surveys. Data obtained clearly showed that the educational programme had significantly changed the attitude and practice of the mothers with respect to various aspects of infant and child feeding practices as stated above.
