The adsorption fundamentals presented in this paper outlined the importance of base materials in determining adsorptive properties of activated carbon. It differentiated between usable capacities in PAC (Powdered Activated Carbon) and GAC (Granular Activated Carbon) Systems, and stated that adsorption rate should not be confused with capacity. As discussed, the feasibility of carbon adsorption may be determined by using computer models, isotherm testing, field or laboratory pilot studies, and the ACT (Accelerated Column Test). For granular systems, reaction testing becomes an integral part of the process evaluation. It has been illustrated through case histories and other data that activated carbon can be cost-effectively applied at point-source or end-of-pipe locations. The commercial options presented include custom design systems which require capital investment and standard design systems which may be used under the terms of a service agreement. Carbon reactivation services can be provided with either arrangement.
