Tests for resistance to fusarium wilt in the breeding of ornamental plants

Since 1985 some ornamental plants (carnations, asters and gladioli) have been tested for resistance to fusarium wilt. A high level of resistance was found in some breeding materials. Inoculum in the form of a spore suspension was incorporated into soil used for planting. Gladioli were also inoculated by injuring the bulbs in the laboratory. Though with both test methods and each of the species the level of disease was different from one year to the other, the degree of resistance remained the same
