Fungicide resistance in populations of plant pathogens: determination, correlations with virulence, and recent evolution of resistance to triadimenol in the barley mildew pathogen in Europe [powdery mildew]

Erysiphe graminis f.sp. hordei, the causal agent of barley mildew, is controlled in Europe by the use of host resistance genes and of fungicides. Random samples of spores were taken from the atmosphere along transects through regions of interest and investigated in the laboratory. Resistance to triadimenol was at a level of a factor 50 to 100 in large parts of northwestern Europe in 1985 and increased in general by more than a factor two up to 1988. There were indications for positive associations between genes conferring virulence to host resistance and resistance to fungicides.
