Recent developments in using variety mixtures to control powdery mildew of barley

In a long-term experiment with four spring barley varieties and the four three-component mixtures that can be composed from them, the mixtures showed a considerable and consistent restriction of powdery mildew disease. This effect was largely responsible for increases in yield and improvements in yield stability in the mixtures compared with the pure stands. The yield advantages remained consistent despite changes in the immigrant pathogen population towards increased frequency of pathogen genotypes able to attack more than one variety in each mixture. Within the mixtures, there was evidence of competition among the host components leading to dominance of one particular variety. Based largely on this experiment, the value of variety mixtures is discussed in relation to current agricultural necds and the possible formation of an informal working group on the problems involved
