Since 1987 the "Istituto di Sperimentazione per la Pioppicoltura" has established a network of over 20,000 permanent sample plots systematically distributed on an area of about four million hectares in the northern plains of Italy. The plots are georeferenced on the UTM coordinates system and are annually ground surveyed for an evaluation of Poplar planted areas and felled stands. For each Poplar stand which falls within the sample network, age, type of cultural practices, diameters, height and phytosanitary state are recorded, as well as other environmental data. 400 out of the 20,000 sample plots yearly surveyed are Poplar cultivated. Due to the short rotation of this culture new plantations and harvesting regard every year about 10% of the total Poplar cultivated areas. The permanent sample plot database is also used for the estimation of the diffusion and the damages of biotic and abiotic adversities, and to develop a growth and yield model
