Research on and breeding for plant disease resistance has gained high priority in recent years (Hjortsholm 1990) because resistance is the best cheapest and environmentally safest plant protection measure. Partial resistance to powdery mildew provides incomplete but durable resistance. It is more pronounced and frequent in wheat than in barley (Table 1). Race-specific resistance is used more frequently in barley than in wheat. It has however the disadvantage of being non-durable (Table 2). Therefore intensive research and plant breeding aims at providing better and more durable resistance. Mlo resistance to barley powdery mildew is very effective (Figure 1) and is considered durable. The present testing of new cereal varieties for disease resistance in Denmark can be improved. This would enable farmers to rely more on resistant varieties for plant protection than on pesticides
