This paper gives the results of the trials conducted at the Jogeva Plant Breeding Station in 1986-1988. Varieties from Denmark (Ca 707723, Ca 52608), France ("Troubadour"), UK ("Koru") and DDR (HVS 61946/70) turned out to be promising starting material for barley breeding on high yield and lodging resistance. New varieties from the USSR ("Dinat", "Nanita", Prizumski 313, "Pervenets", "Vestnik", "Tovarists") had a very high 1000-kernel weight. Some Finnish varieties were very early ripening ("Jussi", "Silja", "Otra" and breeding material). Disease-resistant varieties came from UK, France, Sweden and Canada
