Effect of NPK Fertilizers on the yield and Quality of Flue-cured Leaf Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.)

A field trial was conducted at Bilate (southern Ethiopia) from 1985 to 1987 on alluvial soil with supplemental irrigation from the bilate River. Virginia tobacco variety Kutsaga 110 was used in a plot size of 5 m x 10 m. Urea or calcium nitrate, triple super phosphate (TSP), and potassium sulphate or potassium chloride were used as sources of N, P and K, respectively, in various rates and their combinations to find their effect on yield and quality of flue-cured leaf tobacco. Statistically no significantly increase was detected with increasing level of either N or K. Other chemical analysis results were in the acceptable range for the Virginia-type tobacco. Smoke qualities of aroma and taste were negatively affected with fertilization and were negatively correlated with nicotine content whereas strength was positively correlated. In general there was no need to apply any type of fertilizer to increase leaf yield and improve aroma and taste, but 12 kg ha-1 of N or 10 kg ha-1 of K should be applied to bring the nicotine content to the low end of the acceptable level (1.5 percent).
