Effect of isoprinosine on the immunity of broilers vaccinated against newcastle disease

Isoprinosine is used in medicine as an immunostimulant and antiviral drug. In the present work the possibility of utilizing this compound as an immunostimulant in the vaccination of broilers against Newcastle disease was investigated. For that reason isoprinosine was given at the time of ND vaccination (La Sota, live) in 4 week old broilers and its effect was investigated for the following weeks. 1. The body weight and the spleen weight of the broilers which received isoprinosine was not different compared to that of the controls which did not receive the compound. On the contrary the weight of the bursa of Fabricius of the broilers, which received isoprinosine was lower (P0.01). 2. The haemagglutination inhibiting antibody titres of the broilers which received isoprinosine was much lower (P0.01) compared to that of the controls. 3. It can be concluded that in this case isoprinosine did not act as an immunostimulant, but on the contrary inhibited the effectiveness of the vaccination, probably due to its antiviral activity
