Effect of pH and electrolyte concentration on the dissolution of Al and Si compounds in the soil

In soil the Al-concentration - pH correlation is similar to the Al (OH)3 dissolution curve, but the dissolution of silicate minerals differs considerably from that of silicic acid gels. The concentrations of the components examined differed from soil to soil even at the same pH. If the liquid phase contained a large amount of salts, in the alkaline range the Al and Si contents of the equilibrium solution became insignificant for all samples. In an acidic medium, however, the effect of the salts was manifested as a function of soil characters. At alkaline pH, distilled water suspensions contained large quantities of finely dispersed Al (OH)3 and polysilicic acid colloid. Since the filtrate of suspensions with a high ion content was crystal clear, it can be assumed that the Al and Si dissolved from soil minerals was immediately precipitated on the surface of solid granules, so that only very small quantities remained in the liquid phase
