Lipid peroxidation and vitamin E content changes in the blood serum of pregnant sows

The lipid peroxidation increased in the first half of pregnancy and immediately after farrowing. The vitamin-E level, acting as antioxidant, decreased proportionately. The alterations in the glutation activity have well reflected the necessity of changes justified in the Se-requirement and its satisfaction. Levels with the lowest activity were found between the 4th and 8th weeks of pregnancy. Parallel with the increase of the degree of lypid peroxidation and the decrease of the degree of vitamin-E, acting as antioxidant, the catalase activity also modified equally. According to conclusions drawn from the results, it is expedient to supplement the sows' feed before insemination and farrowing by 0.1 mg selenium and max. 40 mg vitamin-E/body weight kg
