Perinatal losses - the condition of sows. Importance of parturition and nutrition status in the farrowing losses of pigs

The extent of perinatal mortality also depends on the nutritional status of sows. Fatter sows farrow with greater difficulties and fewer of the young live to be one week old. In the experiment in question, sows of normal condition fed with a fodder mixture in which the crude fibre content was raised from 6 to 12 o/o farrowed more live and less dead piglets in a significantly shorter time compared to the control, and the rate of mortality within 3 days was lower. The farrowing of moderately fat sows did not significantly differ from that of the control, while the "fat" sows delivered significantly fewer piglets
