Acidic deposition in Hungary

In Hungary, the health of forests deteriorated gradually in the eighties. On mountainous and hilly country it was the oak stands, and on flat lands the Scotch pine stands, that suffered the worst. In the assessment of the health of forest ecosystems, the circumstances of the air pollution of ecosystems should also be taken into consideration, although the concentration of SO2 and NO gases is relatively low in the country, but at the same time the deposition of pollution by the precipitation may also reach high values. In the vicinity of the Austrian border (Sopron), water samples were taken fortnightly from the precipitation, as well as the ground springs and brooks in aged oak, beech and Norway spruce stands, and nine inorganic ion substances (H+, NH+, Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3, Cl, NO3, SO4) were determined in them. The importance of the gaseous S and NH4-N depositions was the greatest, while the great NH4-N and NO3-N intakes contributed to the destabilization of forests. According to the measurements of precipitation depositions, a high N-intake can be observed - in addition to the serious acid burden - in the forest ecosystems
