In Hungarian tobacco-producing regions, potato Y virus (PVY) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) occurred most frequently. The spread of these 2 viral diseases, which can be easily transferred mechanically and thus cause considerable economic losses, was studied using serological methods before and after heading. In the course of heading, PVY and CMV could be transferred from infected plants to the second, third or fourth plant, whereas the subsequent ones remained healthy. The viral diseases often occurring after heading can thus be attributed to other epidemiological factors rather than to the heading operation
