Evaluation of the effect of different years in tomato variety trials

In a 15-year irrigation experiment, the effect of different years was examined on the yield of the tomato varieties K. Jubileum and K 886. In all cases the yield was closely correlated to the weather during the vegetation period, and to the timing of irrigation. The quantity, average weight, dry matter content and dry matter weight of the yield changed depending on the ratio of the heat sum accumulated from planting out to the supposedly optimum water supply. On the basis of these data the effect of any given year can be evaluated. The reliability of comparative variety trials is improved by averaging the results of 2-4 years
