Effect of rootstocks on the productivity of grafted vines and on the quality of the must

In a long-term, small-plot field experiment studies were made on the effect of rootstocks (Mourvedre x Rupestris 1202 C, Berlandieri x Riparia G 9, Aramon x Rupestris G 1, Solonis x Riparia 1616 C, Berlandieri x Riparia K 5 BB, Berlandieri x Riparia T 5 C (control), Riparia portalis and Aramon x Riparia 143 B) on the grape variety Zengo. When examining the productivity of grafted vines, measurements were made on the yield weight, cluster number, average cluster weight and pruning weight. Among the internal quality indices of the must, the must degree, the titratable acid content, the tartaric acid content and the pH were determined. The results obtained over a 3-year period indicate that the rootstock varieties possessed extremely varied traits and were capable of modifying the productivity of the grafts to a considerable extent, but did not have the same effect on all the parameters studied. The rootstock effect was manifested to the greatest extent in the mass of yield and canes and in parameters related to these, while it had less influence on factors affecting must quality. The 5 BB rootstock improved productivity. The lowest yield was given by vines on Riparia portalis rootstocks
