Study on the gas phase in undisturbed soil columns using a quadrupole mass spectrometer

After suitable preparation, N fertilizer and irrigation were applied to an undisturbed chernozem soil column with lime deposits, on which maize was grown to the 4-6-leaf stage. The measuring system made it possible to evaluate changes in the water vapour, N2, O2 and CO2 concentrations between sampling sites (in space) and sampling dates (in time). The system also recorded other gases (15N2, Ar, fragmented molecules, etc.), not evaluated here, in the 1-300 mass number range. It could be demonstrated that, due to the effect of N fertilization, there was an increase in the N2 content of the gas phase, and that, due to a decrease in the reductive conditions, a large quantity of N2 gas could arise rapidly through the activity of microbes. In the gas phase of the soil, the concentration of water vapour changed inversely with the moisture content of the soil. In the upper 30 cm layer the composition of the gas phase was very varied both quantitatively and qualitatively, suggesting the presence of continuous dynamic changes in the root zone
