Effect of extraction methods on the cation exchange capacity of selected estate soils

An experiment had been conducted to determine the effect of different extraction techniques using different extractants on the cation exchange capacity of selected highly weathered estate soils. Samples were collected from Ap and Bt horizons of the Ultisols from West Java and Lampung. To determine CEC of the soils, extractions were performed by two different techniques i.e. shaking and percolating procedures, with 1N NH4OAc (pH 7.0) and BaCl2 (at soil pH) solutions, respectively. Clay mineralogical analysis was conducted using differential thermal and infra red spectra analysis. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in CEC values of Ap and Bt horizons obtained by percolation and shaking techniques. In contrast, the values obtained by NH4OAc solution were significantly higher than those of BaCl2. The CEC values were related to the contents of each clay mineral species and C-organic rather than to the total gravimetric clay content and/or the latter
