Distillation method influences the yield and quality of cloves leaves oil

A study of the influence of distillation method on the yield and quality of clove leaf oil was conducted at Post Harvest Tecnology Laboratory, Research Institute of Spice and Medicinal Crops Bogor. A completely randomized design was used with 8 treatment combinations consisting of 2 distillation methods and 4 distillation times. Water and steam distillation method produced more oil than steam distillation method. For both distillation methods, the prolonging of distillation period from 2-8 hrs caused the increase of oil yield. The specific gravity and refractive index of the oil produced by steam distillation were lower than the ones produced by water and steam distillation. The total eugenol content and eugenol content of the oil produced by steam distillation were lower the ones produced by water and steam distillation. In general cloves leaf oil produced by water and steam distillation was clearly soluble in 1 volume to 10 volumes of 70 percent alcohol. However, the ones that produced by steam distillation were clearly soluble in 1 volume of 70 percent of Alcohol and slightly opalescent in 2 volumes to 10 volumes of 70 percent of alcohol. The best treatment was water and steam distillation were with 4 hours distillation time because it has high enough yield (93.09 percent) and its physico-chemical properties met the export standard, especially eugenol content (78.2 percent) as the main component of the cloves leaf oil
