[Effect of seeding size and planting distance on the early and total yield of tomatoes grown under plastic houses conditions]

The study was carried out for two growing seasons (1987/88 and 1988/89) under unheated plastic housing (Hartha Experimental Research Station), College of Agriculture, University of Basra, to assess the effect of three seedling sizes; small, medium and large (3-4, 5-6 and more than six true leaves, respectively) in combination with three transplanting distances: 20, 30 and 40 cm apart on early and total yield of tomato cultivar "Primset F1 RS". Results showed that large seedlings grown 30 cm apart gave higher plant fruit numbers for early yield (16.7 fruits) accompanied with higher early yield (1.08 kg/plant). Meanwhile growing the same size of seedlings 20 cm apart gave higher early yield per unit area (12.33 ton/dunum). The maximum plant fruit number (total yield) was obtained from medium seedlings grown 40 cm apart (35.0 fruits), whereas those seedlings grown 30 cm apart produced greatest plant total yield (1.77 kg). Medium sized seedlings grown 20 cm apart resulted in the highest yield per unit area (17.5 ton/dunum). To obtain higher early yield, large seedlings should be transplanted 20 cm apart
