Effect of roughage fiber in the total mixed ration on the digestibility and rumen fermentation in cows

The effect of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content and feeding amounts in total mixed rations (TMR) containing different NDF sources on the digestibility and rumen fermentation in cows was studied. Diets with 26, 31, 36, or 41% NDF and 16% crude protein of early cut grass silage or late cut grass silage, steam flaked corn, and soy bean meal were designed. Feeding of dry matter were 3% and 1% of body weight. Digestion trials were conducted with four dry cows fitted with a ruminal fistel and four lactating cows. Rumen fluid and blood plasma samples were collected on the last day of the digestion trials. Rumen fluid constituents of cows fed only silage were also observed. IN sheep feeding trials, the TDN content with early cut grass silage was (E-silage) 60.1% DM and for late cut grass silage (L-silage) 53.4% DM. On a fresh matter basis the E-silage contained 0.87% butyric acid. TMRs with the same NDF content showed the same ADF content, whether roughage source was E-grass or L-grass. The TDN values (y/%DM) at the 1% feeding level were linearly depressed with increasing silage content (x/%DM)
