Changes in endogenous auxin, gibberellin and cytokinin contents of chicory plants [Cichorium intybus] during forcing

This is an investigation of the changes in endogenous growth hormones in chicory root and the chicon during forcing. There was a high IAA content in the apical bud region, the chicon, before forcing, but the amount of IAA dropped sharply after the start of forcing. The amount of IAA in the upper part of roots was about equal to that in the lower parts during the forcing. At the start of forcing, the chicon showed a maximum of cytokinin, which decreased markedly during forcing. By contrast, gibberellins in the chicon and root before forcing were very low. The amount of gibberellins in the upper and lower parts of the root increased 1 week into the forcing, and there were large increases of gibberellins in the chicon 2 to 3 weeks into the forcing. Auxin and cytokinin in the apical bud region at the start of forcing may participate both in the induction of the hydrolytic enzymes and the differentiation of leaf primordia in the chicon. Further, gibberellins seem to promote the growth of the chicon for 2 to 3 weeks during forcing
